Is this worth watching?
Monday August 07 2006 The Springboks will always have their die-hard supporters, but not everybody are convinced their narrow loss to Australia is the start of a great revival. In fact there are a good many who feel it was much of the same from the Boks. You have the Write of Reply!"Are we going to wait to lose all 3 home games before Jake White is going to get fired , Luke Watson Must play and bring in Dlulane and Floors and BJ and Ruan and get rid of Percy, Please ! Please!"

"Stop making excuses, stand up and be a man. The only reason it doesn't seem 'so bad' is because it is measured against the 49-0 loss which should never have happened."
- Leon Roodman
"To say the Boks 'buthered' it again is absurd and unfair! Theyve shown true grit in coming back from such a poor start to this tour. Poor selections did not help this and it seems that the race-obsessed ANC had some influence there. The SARU and Oregan Hoskins need to wake up, show some guts, support their coach, tell the race-obsessed ANC to get its meddling nose out of sport, but if it cant resist its dictatorship mentality at least begin with the useless Bafanna Bafanna - whose uselessness probably demonstrates the wonders of government meddling in sports.
"Other realities are that we should have had Butch James from the outset and Fourie du Preez should always have been the starting scrumhalf. For the Boks to have improved so vastly in such a short time seems to confirm that Jake White is a very good coach and can achieve wonders provided he focuses on his primary function, coaching."
- Rob Porter
"Unreal! Watching Bok rugby at the moment is so predictable, the forwards struggle to get ball so that it can be KICKED to the opposition, anybody playing against the Boks does not have to compete for the ball because as sure as the sun comes up in the morning the Boks will give it to them soon enough.
"It must be time to have a go with ball in hand, the few times they have the courage to run they do ok, it is like anything the more you do it the better you will become it makes no sense to win all the possession stats and kick we have been doing this for so long teams like the Aussies and All Blacks know how to counter attack with OUR ball as crazy as that sounds. Good luck back home have a go with our runners!"
- J Owen
"After watching this game of rugga I am even more convinced that the Boks, although may have great heart and passion (when they desire), still have NO GAME PLAN, NO STRUCTURE, NO VISION. YAWN!
"You can't turn up test after test and rely on passion alone. Passion in today's rugga world is not enough to win you tests, never mind allowing passion to win the odd one here and there (mostly to weak opposition or because the opposing test nation is having an off day), but to be consistent with your wins you need a game plan, a structure, vision and intelligence.
"In my view there is none of these elements showing in any play pattern of play the Boks have been involved in. I agree they have the talent, but it seems they lack everything else. You can't turn up with 15 individual players and expect to compete against a team of 15! The coaching staff are to blame....no one else.....they are the ones who still stick to this retro Blitzkrieg attacking game and the skop n donder tactics of the yesteryear.
"Come on guys the world has moved on since the 2nd world war!
"And why name a bench when you don't even intend to use it?
"Modern rugga means that you actually have to think before you play, and yes I believe the players can think a winning game, I just don't believe they are allowed to.
"What the Boks do in kicking out of hand is gifting the ball to their opposition making it easy for them to counter without having to commit many forwards to try and win the ball for their backs, allowing an open game which we all know the Boks will be on the losing side more often than not. Surely you should make the opposing team work harder to get their greedy little mitts on the pill? Why not instruct your water boys to carry water out to them as well? Hey don't stop there, allow your medical staff to treat the very guy you just smacked in the eye when he attempted to get the ball off you?
"The Bok forwards used to be admired around the world because it was so hard to win the ball back from them without coming out of the scuffle with a broken nose, cracked rib, black eye...not because they are dirty player, but because of the 'fight' that was needed to just get the ball. Now it seems that the instruction is to allow the Bok forwards to win possession which they do comfortably, then hand it to their backs who run up to the nearest opponent and hand the ball over. If they can't get rid of the 'hot potato' this way they will just kick it over.
"What is really funny is the vision of the night before the recent rugga match, Connolly and Gregan took a wager and settled on beating the pathetic Boks at their own game of skop and donder blitzkrieg, just for the fun of it! And hey presto they did! What a Joke! They must be laughing all the way to New Zealand.
"Hard test match, what a joke, it was a game where the Ozzies previously had thrashed the Boks last encounter and now were going to beat the Boks with their eyes closed, one hand tied behind their backs, and not even play beyond 3 phases before kicking the ball at the Boks because they felt like defending to get in some practice before the real test against the Kiwis.
"And Menner Smit and Wit so what if you win all three games in SA! You still lost the Mandela Shield, Tri-Nations, 2nd spot in world rankings, the respect of the rugga fraternity, good rugga players to every other rugga nation, a marketable brand....boy the list can go on and on and...ON!
"Come on guys....change the name of the Bok for goodness sake you've allowed your politicians to change the name of just about everything else in SA....start a petition to have the name changed to Assegai! Start a 'save the Bok history' charity, lobby your politicians, start marching in the streets with banners, demand your independence but lobbying the UN that Western Cape should become an independent country just so that you can field a top notch Bok team! Don't worry we will support your new country situated in the Western Cape called Bok World with tourism (just as long as you promise to protect us from being beaten up in bars just because we are not Afrikaans).
"Just do anything but whatever you guys do...stop rolling over playing dead! It is time to stop the rot and it is up to you folks living in the heartland!"
- John Granger
"Well having switched the TV off in Brisbane and having watched the Wallabies flagellate themselves over their win, and having watched that pathetic Bok Captain, John Smit pass some snivelling, drivelling comments about how they knew they could win this game that is why they turned up.
"AG, no John, you and your bunch of now sorry losers are contractually bound to turn up in terms of the SANZAR contract.
"We, the public, now have the choice of deciding if we want to pay hard cash to TURN UP to watch your pathetic displays and I can tell you now that I will no longer be paying my hard earned Aussie dollars to watch YOUR disgusting displays such as Brisbane, and the match like the Sydney game. Yes, you could have won it, BUT YOU LOST IT. THAT IS A FACT!
"Smit says he came to win, well, for 40 minutes the Boks kicked the leather off the ball to the extent that Butch James (obviously under instructions kicked the ball in to the Wallabies hands and guess what they SCORED, when in fact, at that stage, they were going BACKWARDS.
"Furthermore, obviously because of the lack of leadership from our glorious Bok leader, he could not work out that Montgomery, after the first kick, was not able to connect with the posts. Did the glorious Springbok captain have the intellect to work out that that Butch James can also kick? No. So what happened 6 more points went begging. The loss was 20-18 I leave you okes back in Sth Africa to work out the maths but my maths teacher at Glenwood High School, Durban taught me well enough to know that, YES, we could have won.
"Clearly Smit did not have the brains nor the confidence in his own leadership abilities to take that decision, Jake made that decision at half time, that Butch should be the kicker in the 2nd half.
"It is time the South African public back home started to vote with their wallets.
"The BLACK politicians who now run South African rugby want AFFIRMATIVE ACTION RUGBY well let them have it. But the South African public if it still has some brains should simply vacate the grounds.
"A vacant Ellis Park, a vacant ABSA Stadium, a vacant Newlands, oh ja, lets not forget Rustenburg. The SA Rugby BOARD will not be in business in the next 12 months, trust me, money still, and always has spoken the loudest.
"Wake up Sth African public you are being hoodwinked by the con artists and their posh cars at SA Rugby.
"I am sure everybody noted that Jake did not use his substitute bench tonight, Eddie Andrews a prop - let him stay in South Africa, Ralapelle do not kill more talent - he ain't yet at international level, a few more seasons at Super 14, maybe.
"Well SA RUGBY is now going down hill so fast not even a miracle can work.
"So who really cares the players, and Coach, are all so HIGHLY paid that they really don't care. The pin up boys.
"To the White guys who are still playing excellent rugby in SA, if you are young enough and want to play international rugby then it is not very hard to work out what you now have to do. CONSULT YOUR FRIENDLY BOK SUPPORTER WHO IS ALSO A LAWYER IN BRISBANE.
"Good luck for the return games in SA, but I somehow do not think you are going to all three, maybe one, but not the other two."
- David Burden
"Sheesh You know I am tired of hearing all these 'so called' Springbok supporters baying for Jake White's blood. A year ago they were the same people that where saying he was the best thing to happen to SA rugby in years.
Lets just look at some facts:
* The boks have never traveled well having lost all there games in Australasia (2 out of 3) last year and the year before except for one against an out of sorts Aus team (Lets remember we lost to Aus before the Tri-Nations too). The only real difference this year is that we lost big in the first game. Yes we lost to France too, but lets remember we lost to them TOO last year.
*Another major fact that seems to have been overlooked is that we are missing three major cogs in our team (namely Skalk, Jaen and Bakkies). Yes I disagree with Watson being left out and think he is by far the best fetcher in SA, but Jake made the mistake of leaving him behind and could not rectify it till he got back to SA. (Who would you rater of had on the field Tilabika and Butch or Watson and Jaco. I vote for the former).
*Lets think about this chaps. We have finally got some 'second' string players who are getting quality experience, one thing we are definitely going to need in next years world cup.
"So stop whining like little spoilt brats and get behind your team. Change is not always a good thing. After all do you want the next in line, Cats coach De Villiers, to take over. Then we who will be crying that we got rid of Jake!"
