Tuqiri outlines his Wallaby worries

Australian winger yet again on the record

Lote Tuqiri has once again stepped into the public eye to insist that his Wallaby team is way off the pace heading towards the next Rugby World Cup.

Tuqiri will mkae his 50th appearance for Australia against Scotland on Saturday, but will do so with a long list of concerns about the team he is playing for.

Aside from the technical flaws, Tuqiri also cited an over-respect of the opposition and a lack of self-belief as undermining factors in what has been a less than successful tour.

"If we're serious about winning the World Cup, our forwards you know ... it's obviously known all teams around the world have got question marks on their forwards, so that's where we've got to improve markedly," he said to the AAP.

"And I think they've improved. They've been playing for 80 minutes and they've had a crack and grinded results out.

"You can tell by some of the scrums last week and even against Italy the scrums later in the game were quite good for us, considering.

"But we've got to improve our depth there. If we want to win a World Cup, we're going to have to beat tier-one teams three weeks in a row - in the quarter-final, semi-final and obviously the final.

"If I was being honest, I don't think we're there yet to even challenge for a final spot at the moment."

Tuqiri urged the Wallabies to start backing themselves, and to start thinking more about their own game.

"Sometimes we may do a bit too much homework on the other team and play to their style more than going out and playing to ours and having a go," he said.

"We get caught up in all of that and sometimes go out with the wrong game plan. We need to concentrate on us.

"We should play to our strengths a bit more and see where we go from there, start getting the ball wide and using our backs, guys like Chris Latham.

"We've got guys coming through like Cameron Shepherd, who had a really good game [on Tuesday] night, and Drew Mitchell, who scored a double.

"We've got a lot of depth in those positions. That's where our strength lies."

Once again, off-field behaviour and attitude has been highlighted on the tour too. Tuqiri is no stranger to off-field controversy, but denied the suggestion that the team is lacking in discipline compared to former teams, and pointed to the increase in media coverage as a factor.

"We're just doing the normal things blokes do on tour," he said.

"I'm sure back in their day they did different things. Blokes could have a few beers during the week.

"But it's obviously scrutinised a lot more now and you've got to cater to that a fair bit more these days. We're not doing anything different this year than what we have in the past.

"You go out and have fun with the boys during the week, monkey around, play practical jokes on each other and things like that. Nothing stupid.

"We've got major sponsors now who have clauses in their contracts with rugby and to the association that stipulate that you can't play up, to try to keep a clean image in the game, and that responsibility really comes on to the players.

"At the end of the day, we're running out with their names on our backs. We're representing them, they pay a hefty amount of dollars to sponsor the game, and obviously that relates to coming into our pockets.

"So we've got to realise that we're representing them and Australia at the same time."

With the World Cup year looming, Tuqiri asked the media to get behind the Wallabies as they set about winning their third World Cup next year.

"We'd like people to be positive about how we're going," he said.

"You don't want piggy-backing - everyone needs a kick up the arse now and then - but you'd like a bit of support from obviously ex-players and things like that.

"We're positive here but outside influences could probably be a bit more positive about us."
