Jones feeling the pressure to perform

Osprey's star looking to side-step the mighty axe

Wales number eight Ryan Jones is determined to avoid the axe by putting Canada to the sword when the two teams face each other at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday.

Jones returns to a full-strength Wales side with a golden chance to nail down his place for next weekend's headline Test against New Zealand.

An upset against the Canadians would be a major shock - their starting side only features 11 professional players.

But competition for places in the Wales team is so strong that Jones knows they cannot afford to under-estimate the tourists.

"We have to take Canada seriously - it'll be a nightmare otherwise," said Jones.

"This will be the last thing on Gareth's mind before next week's selection so it's up to us.

"We need to put in a complete performance and a resounding victory. That's the only way we can do it.

"We are competing for jerseys and places. Training has become a real battle. It's competitive and there's not a lot to choose between the players.

"There's an edge to competition among the players. When you're named in the squad then given the match jersey you know you've earned it.

"You are not given it because there's no-one else or for any reason other than you're the best man to do the job," the Ospreys number eight added.

Through a combination of design and circumstance, Wales head coach Gareth Jenkins is working with a stronger squad than any of the players have experienced.

The Grand Slam winners of 2005 are all back from injury, while those who got their chance through last season and on the summer tour are providing real competition.

Jenkins is deliberately encouraging such competition for places. Only yesterday he warned Gavin Henson his position in the team is on the line heading into Friday night's game.

Jones is feeling that pressure to perform - but after a year out following a shoulder reconstruction he is relishing it.

"I'd played a lot more Test rugby prior to the Lions tour than I did leading into this series. I don't by any means think I'm a complete player," Jones said.

"I've had eight games since having a year out with injury and if in two years' time I was still playing like this I wouldn't be too happy.

"But I'm on the road to full recovery and am quite happy with the way things have gone so far.

"I'm playing for my country for the second time since a long lay-off so my form can't be that bad.

"It's been about getting up to speed. It's difficult to pick up where you left off. You get in a groove and things need to come second nature and at the moment I'm probably thinking about things too much," he added.

The Canada side includes Cardiff Blues scrum-half Ed Fairhurst at full-back and former Ospreys and Wales U21 lock Luke Tait.

The 25-year-old was a member of the Overmach Parma side which dumped the Newport Gwent Dragons out of the Heineken Cup with a stunning play-off win back in June.

Canada, captained by former Saracens and Stade Francais scrum-half Morgan Williams, are without leading players like Jamie Cudmore, Rod Snow and Mike James.

But they head into Friday's game with one eye on their opening World Cup fixture - against Wales in Nantes on September 9.

"We want to make them aware that they are going to have a tough game on Friday night, and come World Cup time they are going to have a tougher time of it," said Canada coach Ric Suggitt.
