FRU to hold onto Serevi

'We had a very positive discussion'The Board of the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) look set to hold onto one of their prized possession, Sevens master and coach Waisale Serevi, after reports that he is considering an offer to coach in South Africa.
Earlier reports had suggested that the Falcons, who play in the Premier Division of the Currie Cup in South Africa, were keen to signs Serevi on a two-year deal.
However, the FRU board has had some fruitful discussions with Serevi, as they strive to solve the recent impasse over his future with Fiji rugby.
"We had a very positive discussion with Waisale Serevi," FRU chairman Keni Dakuidreketi told teivovo.com.
"We talked about his role with Fiji rugby and where he wants to go with his coaching career.
"He stated very clearly that he wishes to remain as coach of the Fijian Sevens team, so we will now have further talks with him in an effort to finalise a contract that reflects this position."
In August 2005, the FRU hired Serevi as a fulltime resource coach a role that also saw him work with the Fiji Under-18 team and travel to Europe as assistant backline coach for the Fijian national 15-man team.
When the International Rugby Board (IRB) Sevens series began in December 2005, Serevi focused his attention on the Fijian Sevens team with great success, leading the team to their first-ever IRB Sevens Series title.
"Now that Serevi has made it clear that he wishes to concentrate on Sevens only, we can work out an arrangement that suits both parties," Dakuidreketi said.
"There has been a lot of media speculation in the last few weeks, but we are now confident that both sides can move forward positively and thus allow Serevi to prepare for next months Wellington Sevens with a clear head."
