France's Amateurs thump Spain

Warm up for 6NB

On Saturday France Amateur - a team chosen from the Federale Divisions which are "amateur" - beat Spain 47-0 at Aire Sur L’Adour in France.

The French side led 23-0 at half-time.

The Spanish side chosen by coach Ged Glynn was something of an experiment as the coach wanted to test some young players out on the threshold of the European Nations Cup ("Six Nations B"). Spain's opening match is against neighbours Portugal in Lisbon on 3 February, and the Portuguese are well prepared for the encounter, having beaten Morocco in successive weeks.

Glynn wanted to test young players - Luís A. Cano, Igor Alberro, Alastair Chambers, Ignacio Gutiérrez, Raúl Turrión, Manuel Mazo and two players already capped for Spain, Juan Cano and Pedro Martín - and also see how the veterans were getting on - Iván Criado, Andrei Kovalenco, César Sempere and Manu Serrano. The team had just three days to prepare while in France and then they were forced to spend most of the time indoors because of the inclement weather.

The French side took control of the match from the start, and three penalty goals and two converted tries gave them a 23-0 lead at the break. In the second half they scored another four tries.

For Spain there was not just the setback of the hiding but also the injury problem because Caesar Bernasconi, Caesar Sempere, Antonio Beltrán and Alexander Ortega were all injured.
