Riordan answers Ireland S.O.S.

Horgan injury opens door for Connacht full-back

Connacht full-back Daniel Riordan has been called up to the Ireland squad this week as the national team resume training for their upcoming Six Nations campaign.

The S.O.S. came from Ireland coach Eddie O'Sullivan after his first choice wing Shane Horgan limped out of Leinster's 19-13 Heineken Cup defeat at Gloucester on Friday.

Riordan is currently Connacht's top try-scorer of the season with five tries in his sixteen appearances so far with the club.

Meanwhile, Leinster's Robert Kearney and Munster's John Kelly have joined Horgan in pulling out of the Ireland's Six Nations training squad.

Utility back Kearney has a hamstring problem while the experienced Kelly is nursing bruised ribs.

Called up are Northampton's David Quinlan and Kieran Lewis of Leinster.

Ireland open their Six Nations challenge in Wales on February 4.
