Greeff retires after neck injuryThe Stormers' Springbok utility back Werner Greeff announced the end of his playing career on Monday, citing injury concerns relating to a neck injury sustained last year.
The 29-year-old Greeff spent his entire first class career based in Cape Town, gaining 43 caps for the Stormers and 62 for Western Province in a career that spanned from 1999 to 2006.
Greeff made his debut for South Africa in 2002 against Argentina, and enjoyed a magical debut season with the Springboks. He capped off a terrific Tri-Nations performance at fullback with a memorable match-winning try and conversion in the last moments of the game against Australia at Ellis Park.
In all, he won 11 caps for the national side.
A superbly versatile player, Greeff could play anywhere from No.10 to No.15.
"Werner is an exceptional rugby talent and despite his injury last year has played himself back into contention for the 2007 season. We understand and back his decision to retire, but will certainly miss him both on and off the field," said Stormers coach, Kobus Van Der Merwe.
Greeff said he was "privileged" to have had a long and satisfying career.
"Injury has forced me to make a decision to pursue my business interests," Greeff said.
"Whilst disappointed, I believe it is the correct decision. I will miss not being an on-field part of this new and exciting era of play and wish the team all the best as they head into their 10th celebration season. A special thank you to all that have through this game touched my life, especially my fellow players, coaches, management, sponsors and the fans. I am going to miss it."
