Olivier out of Cup Final

Injury ruled Bulls centre out

The Blue Bulls suffered a late setback when Springbok centre Wynand Olivier was ruled out of the ABSA Currie Cup Final encounter with the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein on Saturday.

The Bulls team management confirmed on Friday morning that because of an injury Olivier will not be playing in the Final.

Olivier had initially been cleared of concussion and an ankle injury, as well as a knee complaint and was named in the starting line-up on Wednesday.

But late Thursday it emerged that the blond Springbok's participation in the match was in even more doubt than the Bulls would acknowledge. A final decision on his fitness was postponed until Friday morning, when it was confirmed that he won't play.

Powerful midfielder Dries Scholtz will take the place of Olivier in the No.12 jersey in Bloemfontein.

Scholtz was the man of the match in the league game between the sides in Bloemfontein earlier this year and also played a starring role in the Bulls' 41-31 victory over the Cheetahs at Loftus Versfeld a few weeks ago.

Team manager Wynie Strydom said Olivier was almost 90 percent right, but they did not want to take any chance.

"We have a strict policy that we won't play a player unless he is 100 percent fit. We have learnt our lesson in that regard in the past," Strydom said.
