Harding, who has played 32 games for the club since his try-scoring debut against Worcester in the 2005/06 season and helped the squad achieve Heineken Cup qualification, was disappointed to leave the club but both parties felt it was the fairest solution due to the lack of opportunities in the current back-row.

"I am sad to leave but have wonderful memories of all the support I have received from the Northampton Saints fans during my time at Franklin’s Gardens," said Harding.

"They always made me feel most welcome on the pitch and in the community of Northampton."

Saints head coach Paul Grayson acknowledged the loss of one of last season's key players.

"Sam Harding is a fine rugby player and he has performed well in his time at Saints," said Northampton head coach Paul Grayson.

"However, competition for places has meant that his involvement has been limited and this has been a source of frustration to him.

"He leaves Northampton with our best wishes for his future both in the game and beyond."
