Cohen warned for official push

Cohen on best behaviour

Ben Cohen of Northampton Saints has been warned to his future conduct after he pushed touch-judge Peter Huckle in the chest during the Guinness Premiership match between Northampton Saints and NEC Harlequins on February 17.

Huckle had stepped in to intervene in an altercation between Cohen and his opposite number when Cohen whirled around and pushed him to the floor.

Huckle subsequently wrote to the RFU that he did not feel he had been the personal target of the aggression, more a body caught up in the moment. He insisted that Cohen had immediately and repeatedly apologised for what he had done.

In a letter sent to Cohen by RFU Disciplinary Officer, Judge Jeff Blackett, Cohen was admonished for losing control, but was mitigated by his apparent lack of intent.

"In this incident you clearly lost control in that you engaged in an off the ball exchange with another player and were not fully aware of what was going on around you," read the letter.

"Had there been any evidence that you intended to assault the touch judge I would have had no hesitation in commencing disciplinary proceedings against you.

"However, I have taken account of the touch judge's comments above - particularly his opinion that he was not "the intended target," a view which is corroborated by your immediate actions afterward when you apologised, and his decision that no more action than a word of warning from the referee was necessary."

Cohen, who has a reasonably clean disciplinary record, indicated his relief at the closure of the case.

"Saturday was a heated and emotional game for everyone involved with the club but I would never have intentionally wanted to harm a match official or player," he said in a statement.

"I am grateful to the RFU for not taking this matter any further. I am not an undisciplined player and would not want to be thought of as one."
